NLIU-Trilegal Summit on Corporate and Commercial Laws concludes

CBCL was established in the year 2008 at NLIU as a ‘Centre of Excellence’, with the goal of generating awareness and encouraging debate and discussion in the field of business and commercial laws. The Summit is a unique endeavor undertaken between the organizing bodies –CBC and Trilegal, one of the premier and most reputed law firms in India. 

NLIU and Trilegal planned this exercise during which the participants are encouraged to address and analyse key issues arising in the corporate world. Consequently, it is also the Summit’s objective to increase awareness about and facilitate in developing students’ aptitude in the field of corporate and commercial laws. The Summit also provides students with the rare opportunity of interacting with professionals and industry practitioners, who are at the top of their fields, along with ranking officials of various regulatory bodies.

This year the Summit witnessed a wide panel of experts from various regulatory bodies of the industry including reputed partners from Trilegal Yogesh Singh and  Ramakant Rai, Ranjeeta Dubey (General Manager, Reserve Bank of India) and Dr. R.J.R. Kasibhatla (Deputy Legal Advisor, Ministry of Law and Justicealong with, Rupesh Mishra (Vice President, Everstone Capital Advisers), Sunil Kumar (Deputy G.M. at the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India), Dr. Naveen Bali (Assistant Professor, Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs),Shekhar (Joint Director, Competition Commission of India) and Shravani Shekhar (Senior Associate at Trilegal).

Furthermore, we received more than 100 submissions from 40 plus law colleges across the country including NLSIU Bangalore, NALSAR Hyderabad, NLU Delhi, NLU Jodhpur, GNLU Gandhinagar, ILS Pune, Christ University Bangalore, RMLNLU Lucknow, Army Institute of Law Mohali, among others. On 30th August 2019, our alumni Yogesh Singh, Ramakant Rai and Rupesh Mishra took an interactive session with the students of NLIU and the participants of the Summit wherein the addressed questions relating to workplace etiquette, trust building with clients, and gender parity in firms.

The first three editions of the Summit focused on mergers and acquisition, held in 2016, 2017 and 2018 were a resounding success, witnessing submission from all over the country. The fourth edition onwards, CBCL expanded the scope of the Summit to cover the whole of Corporate and Commercial Laws. In addition, ‘The CBCL Blog’, which invites submission on various facets of corporate and commercial laws has witnessed tremendous growth in receiving submissions from students and industry professionals alike.

 On the 31st August 2019, paper presentations by the various participants were held. This year’s edition, much like the previous one, encompassed the entire scope of corporate and commercial laws in India. The submissions included topics ranging far and wide; from differential voting rights, to big data mergers and pricing algorithms used by service industry. The topics piqued the judges’ interest along with the students in the audience, who witnessed the brilliant presentation by the participants.

The presentation session was followed by a Q&A session by the panelists in which knowledge, speaking skills and mental agility of the participants was tested. Soon after, the floor was opened to the audience, whose pointed questions kept the participants on their toes.

Soon after the feedback session followed, in which our distinguished panelists gave their invaluable comments to the participants which would definitely prove invaluable to them going forward. The Summit concluded with the valedictory ceremony where winners for the presentation were announced and facilitated by the panelists and our Vice Chancellor, Prof. (Dr.) V. Vijaykumar.
