 A film actor, producer, martial artist, stuntman and philanthropist popularly known as the "KHILADI" Akshay Kumar turns 51 on Sunday. 

Here are some facts about the life of this wonderful actor and an even wonderful human being.

Early Life
  • His real name is Rajiv Hari Om Bhatia. While the media affectionately addresses him as Akki, he still goes by the nickname of Raju among his near and dear ones.
  • Born in Amritsar on 09September, 1967, Akshay was raised in Old Delhi' Chandni Chowk neighbourhood before shifting to Koliwada in Mumbai. 
  • He attended Mumbai's Don Bosco School where he formed a gang of ten friends who called themselves 'Bloody Ten'. 
  • The Virgo dude left for Thailand to master the ancient martial art of Taekwondo.
  • While in Bangkok, Akshay worked in a restaurant called Metro Guest House to make ends meet.



Film Career
  • Upon his return to Mumbai, he commenced the teaching of martial arts
  •  One of his students, an aspiring photographer, recommended Kumar into modelling which ultimately led to a modelling assignment.
  • He made more money within the first two days of shooting, in comparison to his entire months salary, and therefore chose a modelling career path.
  •  He worked as an assistant for photographer Jayesh Sheth for 18 months without payment to shoot his first portfolio.

  • One morning, he missed his flight for an ad-shoot in Bangalore. Disappointed with himself, he visited a film studio along with his portfolio. That evening, Kumar was signed for a lead role by producer Pramod Chakravarthy for the movie Deedar.
  • Kumar made his first appearance as the lead actor opposite Raakhee and Shantipriya in Saugandh 
  • The following year he starred in Abbas Mustan-directed suspense thriller, Khiladi, widely considered his breakthrough role.
  • he man enjoys quite a loyalty among certain filmmakers. He has starred in all films produced by Keshu Ramsay (Mr Bond, Paandav, Sabse Bada Khiladi, Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi, Mr and Mrs Khiladi, International Khiladi, Khiladi 420, Khakee, Insan, Family: Ties of Blood) and directed by Vipul Shah (Aankhen, Waqt: The Race Against Time and Namastey London).
  • In 2000, Kumar starred in the Priyadarshan-directed comedy Hera Pheri alongside Paresh Rawal and Sunil Shetty.
  • He has also hosted the famous TV show Khatron Ke Khiladi and judged Master Chef India (season 1).

Personal Life & Other works
  • After being engaged twice to actress Twinkle Khanna, the daughter of actors Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia, Kumar married her on 17 January 2001. 
  • Their first child was a boy, whom they named Aarav. 
  • Twinkle gave birth to their second child, daughter Nitara, on 25 September 2012.
  • In 2008, he was named the "Sexiest Man Alive" by People (India) magazine.
  • Kumar also had donated a sum of ₹90 lacs to drought hit farmers in Maharashtra in 2015.
  • He has also donated INR 50 lacs to aid drought affected people through the Maharashtra government's Jalyukt Shivar Abhiyan.
  • On 9 April 2017, Kumar and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh promoted a mobile phone app, Bharat Ke Veer, which allows users to donate money to families of people who sacrificed their lives for India. 
  • Again on 20 January 2018, he participated in the launch of an Anthem for the initiative. In an event in Delhi he appealed for people to donate to the Bharat Ke Veer cause, and ₹12.93 crores was collected.

  • 2008: Honorary Doctorate of Law by the University of Windsor in Ontario, Canada for his outstanding work in the film industry and contribution to social work.
  • 2004: Rajiv Gandhi Award for his Outstanding achievements in Bollywood.
  • 2009: IIFA-FICCI Frames, "Most Powerful Entertainer of the Decade Award" for his contribution to Indian cinema.
  • 2011: The Asian Awards Year  Outstanding Achievement in Cinema
  • 2017: National Film Award for best Actor in 'Rustom.'
