Neeraj Chopra wins gold in javelin throw in Asian Games

On the 9th day of the Asian Games Indian Athlete Neeraj Chopra won gold medal for the country in javelin throw on Monday. It proved to be a good day for India as it earned five medals on Monday. 

 20 years old Neeraj helped India in winning its first ever gold medal in this category in the Asian Games. Neeraj also held the Indian flag during the opening ceremony of the 18th Asian Games. 

This is the 8th gold medal won by India. Neeraj, throwing the javelin 88.06 meters away, won the gold medal, China's Liu Kijen won silver by throwing 82.22 meters and Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem with 80.75 meters won the bronze medal. 

 Neeraj threw 83.46 meter in his first attempt and secured his gold medal by throwing 88.06 meters in the third attempt. 

Neeraj was born at Panipat, Haryana. He has also won gold for the country in the Commonwealth Games. In 2016, he became the champion with a throw of 86.48 meters in the Under-20 World Championship in Poland. 

 Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Neeraj for his win.

Earlier, in the 1982 Asian Games, Gurtej Singh won the bronze medal in Javelin throw.
