Bhaiyyu Maharaj commits suicide

Recently given the status of minister by the Madhya Pradesh government Bhaiyyu Maharaj, a popular spiritual leader committed suicide on Tuesday by allegedly shooting himself in the head.

Bhaiyyuji Maharaj whose real name was Uday Singh Deshmukh, allegedly shot himself over "domestic issues" at his ashram in Indore. The police found a suicide note which hinted that he was "depressed". He was declared dead at Bombay hospital in Indore.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan expressed his grief, who created quite a stir and evoked the opposition earlier this year by appointing Bhaiyyu Maharaj and four other "sadhus" as ministers.

Bhaiyyu Maharaj was known for his links with influential politicians and businessmen. His followers included Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar. He also acted as a mediator during the 2011 anti-corruption campaign led by Anna Hazare and Arvind Kejriwal.

He was popular in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. Many of his followers gathered outside the hospital to know about his condition.

Maharaj also refused to accept minister status saying "a post has no importance to a saint."

Attacked  by the comments of opposition, the state government justified the controversial move saying it was to facilitate their work as members of a committee for the conservation of the river Narmada.
