A tribute to Jagjit Singh with a tinge of dance

Bhopal: Reviving the culture of performing Kathak on Ghazals and paying tribute to late Ghazal king Jagjit Singh, noted danseuse V Anuradha Singh’s left the art lovers of Bhopal spell bound on the first day of the three day dance drama festival ‘Rangkriti Utsav’ on Monday at Shaheed Bhavan.

Organized by Rangkriti Natya Sansthan, the event is being held under the scheme of Cultural Functions Grant Scheme, which will also see felicitation of noted actor Rajiev Verma, theatre personal Alok Chaterjee, Tanveer Ahmed, announcer Uma  Iyer Rawal, International Sports Commentator Prashant Singh Sengar and writer Jaya Sarkar. The artistes will be honoured with the Rangkriti Sanman during the Shaan-e-MadhyPradesh Sanman Samaroh here. 

The evening commenced with the V Anuradha Singh performing a Shiv Vandana, which was followed by a jugalbandi with the violin. Staging the traditional chakris of the dance form, she skilfully swirled around and performed the 36, 48 and 60 chakkars making leaving the audience wonder struck. She then performed a Tarana
in Raga Hansdhwani.

She concluded her performance by paying a tribute to Jagjit Singh, by performing on his ghazals. Being masterful at converting the lyrics of the Ghazal in expressions she carried the audience through an array of emotions. She performed on ‘Baat niklegi to...’, ‘kal chaudavi ki raat thi...’, ‘Wo kagaz ki kashti..’, ‘Fir Sawan rut Pawan...’ and ‘tera chehra kitna suhana lagta hai...’. 

“Not everyone opts for performing on Ghazals since there is very minimum scope for an artiste to show one’s talent. However, in the earlier days, Ghazal was one of the very important parts of performing Kathak. Gradually it faded away and was replaced by Thumri and Bhajan. My teacher performed on Ghazals and now I am reviving this trend on performing on ghazals which is lost with time,” V Anuradha Singh said.

The danseuse was accompanied by table player and singer Salim Allahwale on vocal and Tabla, Manoj Bamrele on Violin, Tabla Shahnawaz Husain and light direction was done by Anoop Joshi. Principal Secretary, Department of Culture Manoj Shrivastava was the chief guest of the event. The event was presided by Dr. Ajay Singh Patel, Guest of honour Aruneshwar
Sinhdev, Chairman Sports promoter group and Bharatnatyam exponent Dr. Lata Singh Munshi graced the occasion with their presence.
