Girl child dies of drowning, AAP accuses State Govt

A two and a half year girl drowned on Wednesday at her farm near her residence in Ekhand village in Khandwa district, approximately 300 kilometres from Bhopal, the state capital of Madhya Pradesh.
While her parents allege that the girl drowned in their farm due to the flooding of back-water from Omkareshwar dam, district Collector Khandwa, Abhishek Singh said that the girl died due to drowning in the well.
The allegations were made by the Aam Aadmi Party members during a press conference on Wednesday.
“The BJP led Shivraj government has increased the water level of Onkareshwar dam from 189 metres to 192.57 meters. The girl died after drowning in the back-waters of the dam which was released to maintain the new water levels,” senior member of the Aam Aadmi Party Chitrupa Palit, said.
The party also alleged that the Collector Khandwa’s statement on the death of the girl was baseless since no government official visited the site of accident, despite being informed.
“Not following the orders of the Supreme Court which stated that the water level at Omkareshwar dam should not exceed 189 metres, the state government has increased the water level of the dam to 192.57 metres. Moreover, there are no rehabilitation facilities for Ekhand, Ghogal, Toki, khamkeda kelva and other villages which in this area are feared to drown from the back waters of the dam. The death of this toddler is an outcome of this,”  she added.
